First, through inpatient art therapy where we could talk and scribble and not have to think for an hour. Then, in painting lessons with my mom where I could concentrate on mixing colors and not the mess that was my brain (and life). When I moved back to New York, I wanted to find something similar, a way to connect while being disconnected, because I wasn't fully myself but also really needed to surround myself with people and support. I kept thinking back to my inpatient experience, the moments that felt like kindergarten or middle school art class: one hour free from everything. Here are some materials, some paper, and some people like yourself. The rest is up to you.The Better Club is a creative mental health community, a third space for arts, crafts, and conversation (if you're comfortable). We host workshops made to build connections, but also create space for when you want to be in community and keep to yourself. Because sometimes, when you're dealing with mental health, it's hard to decide how you want to connect. There are moments when you know you need to put yourself out there but don't have the energy, and others when you genuinely want to build relationships but feel like you don’t know how, or what to do with your hands. We have space for both. Space for you and all you might be going through. On our events page, you'll see events for connecting, disconnecting, or both, so you know exactly what to expect. If you're feeling social, try a workshop. If you just want to escape and sketch for a few hours, try unserious art therapy.
